Chennai’s rapid urban expansion, limited local sources and vulnerability to climatic variability required long term planning for water supply and sanitation. Existing systems were fragmented and increasingly inadequate to meet projected demand.

The project prepared a comprehensive master plan to guide development over a long term horizon. It assessed existing sources, treatment facilities, transmission networks, distribution systems and Sewage infrastructure, analysed population growth projections and future demand scenarios and integrated additional sources with strengthened treatment, storage and conveyance while planning expanded Sewage coverage and treatment capacity.

TCE's Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers led system studies, demand forecasting, hydraulic analysis and evaluation of alternative development strategies. Phased implementation plans were developed by prioritising projects based on urgency, feasibility and long term sustainability. Detailed engineering recommendations were prepared for key infrastructure identified for early execution.

Impact

The master plan provided Chennai with a structured roadmap for coordinated development of water supply and sanitation infrastructure, enabled informed decision making and guided phased investments to improve service reliability and public health outcomes.
