Mumbai generates one of the highest volumes of wastewater in India due to its population density and urban scale. Existing treatment capacity was insufficient to meet growing demand and to protect the coastal environment. The project was undertaken to significantly enhance treatment capacity and improve the quality of treated effluent. The programme comprised multiple large wastewater treatment facilities designed to collectively handle very high daily flows. Treatment systems were planned to achieve consistent performance, enable reuse of treated water for non potable applications and reduce environmental impact through effective sludge management. Severe land constraints required compact and space efficient plant configurations with multi level arrangements so that operational flexibility and long term maintainability could be achieved within dense urban settings.

TCE's Story

Tata Consulting Engineers played a key role from concept development through detailed engineering and commissioning support. The scope included treatment process selection, layout planning, hydraulic and structural design of treatment units, and integration of automation and control systems to ensure reliable plant operation. Severe land constraints required compact and space-efficient plant configurations, including multi-level arrangements. Designs were tailored to ensure operational flexibility and long-term maintainability within dense urban settings.

Impact

The project strengthened Mumbai’s wastewater management capacity, improved coastal water quality and increased opportunities for water reuse which contributed to a more sustainable urban water cycle.
