The Ukai Thermal Power Station, operated by the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited, marked a significant milestone as India’s inaugural power station unit boasting a capacity exceeding 100 MW. Situated along the Tapi River, it stood as one of Gujarat’s prominent coal-fired power plants.

Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) played a pivotal role as the Architect’s engineers for the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB), specifically overseeing the Thermal plants at Ukai. This encompassed Units 1 and 2, each with a capacity of 120 MW, and Unit 3, which had a capacity of 200 MW. TCE assumed responsibility for comprehensive Basic and Detailed engineering, along with providing crucial procurement support for individual equipment and systems, considering the project’s execution through a multiple-package route. The commissioning of Units 1 and 2 took place in 1976, followed by the commissioning of Units 3 and 4 in 1979.

Units 1 and 2 marked a pioneering achievement as the country’s first thermal power plants exceeding 100 MW. The transportation of coal to the plant was facilitated by rail, while river water served as a vital component of the Cooling water system. Although Units 1 and 2 have been decommissioned, Unit 3 remains in active operation.

In this endeavour, Tata Consulting Engineers played a crucial role as the detailed engineering consultant for Units 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, contributing significantly to the successful implementation and operation of the Ukai Thermal Power Station.
