The Tarapur Atomic Power Project is one of the pioneering nuclear power stations in India. It is located on the west coast of Maharashtra at Tarapur. Units 1 and 2 are of the Boiling Water Reactor type and were commissioned in 1969, marking an important milestone in India’s nuclear energy journey. These units supply electricity to the western grid at a tariff of 83 paise per unit, with equal distribution to Gujarat and Maharashtra. Power is transmitted from a 220 kV switchyard through two dedicated circuits to each state, ensuring reliable and continuous supply. Since the start of commercial operation, the two units have generated an impressive 48,800 million units of energy, contributing significantly to the region’s power requirements.

Tata Consulting Engineers played a vital role in the success of the Tarapur Atomic Power Project by providing complete engineering and commissioning services. Our team ensured safe, efficient and reliable performance of the plant, which was critical for India’s early nuclear power programme. This project not only delivered clean and dependable energy but also set a strong foundation for future nuclear developments across the country. It helped strengthen India’s energy security and reduce dependence on conventional sources of power.

TCE’s contribution to this landmark project established a long term partnership with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. It reaffirmed our position as a trusted engineering partner in building world class nuclear power infrastructure. Over the years, this association has grown stronger, enabling us to support several strategic projects that drive sustainable energy solutions for India.
