The Rooppur Nuclear Power Project is Bangladesh’s first nuclear power station and a defining milestone in the country’s power generation journey. Located in Ishwardi, Pabna district, the project consists of two VVER‑1200 Generation III+ reactors with a combined installed capacity of 2,400 MW. Designed to deliver reliable base load power, Rooppur will play a central role in meeting Bangladesh’s growing long term electricity demand while strengthening energy security through diversified generation sources. In April 2026, the project achieved a major transition point with the commencement of first fuel loading for Unit 1. This milestone marks the shift from construction to testing and commissioning, bringing the plant significantly closer to operational readiness. Unit 1 is targeted for final completion by the end of December 2026, while Unit 2 is expected to follow in the coming years.

TCE Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers has been associated with the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project since 2020, contributing to the execution of the Turbine Island, one of the most critical and complex zones within a nuclear power plant. TCE’s scope of work includes civil design review and site supervision services, supporting quality execution across high precision structures and interfaces. Our involvement has focused on enabling consistent construction quality, adherence to stringent nuclear safety norms and effective coordination across large scale civil, structural and finishing works. Through sustained site engagement, TCE has supported the transition of the Turbine Island from construction into the commissioning phase. The contract remains valid through December 2027, covering ongoing activities as the project advances through testing, commissioning and final completion

Impact

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Project represents a landmark step for Bangladesh’s energy sector. Once fully operational, the plant will add 2,400 MW of low carbon electricity to the national grid, supporting stable power supply for industries, cities and communities while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Beyond capacity addition, the project establishes nuclear power as a long term pillar of the country’s energy mix. For Tata Consulting Engineers, Rooppur reflects our capability to contribute to globally significant nuclear infrastructure through disciplined design review and on ground supervision. The project reinforces TCE’s role in supporting large scale, safety critical energy developments that enable national growth and long term sustainability.
