The Orange Gate to Marine Drive twin tunnel project is India’s largest diameter urban road tunnel and Mumbai’s first of its kind. The 9.96-kilometre tunnels will connect the Eastern Freeway at Orange Gate to Marine Drive, reducing travel time by up to 20 minutes and improving connectivity to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The alignment runs at depths of up to 50 metres beneath Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), passing under nearly 700 buildings including heritage structures, railway corridors and Metro Line 3. This makes it one of the most technically challenging urban tunnel projects in the country. The tunnels will feature two traffic lanes and an emergency lane in each tube, advanced ventilation and fire safety systems, cross-passages every 300 metres and an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). The design ensures minimal surface disruption and protection of heritage structures along the route.

Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), in partnership with Hill International Inc., is delivering Project Management Consultancy services for this landmark project. Our role covers the entire lifecycle, including detailed design review to ensure technical accuracy, stakeholder management for smooth coordination, and construction monitoring to maintain safety and quality standards. TCE is also responsible for driving technical excellence and ensuring that the project meets its ambitious timelines and performance goals. This achievement reflects TCE’s strong capability in managing complex urban infrastructure projects.
