The project involved feasibility studies and system planning for conversion of an existing 1,500 V DC suburban railway traction system to a 25 kV AC traction system. The initial corridor covered the Churchgate to Borivali section, with planned extension up to Virar to establish a uniform traction system.

The study included evaluation of power supply at 22 kV and assessment of alternative traction substation configurations suitable for high density suburban rail operations. The project introduced advanced features such as gas insulated switchgear and bi-directional numerical distance protection for overhead contact lines.

TCE's Scope

TCE carried out feasibility studies for power supply sourcing and formulated multiple design options for traction substations. Technical specifications were prepared for traction system equipment, including substations and protection systems.

TCE completed the studies and submitted comprehensive documentation covering system configuration, equipment requirements and protection philosophy.

Impact

The assignment supported transition to a higher capacity and more energy efficient traction system. The recommendations enabled adoption of advanced protection and switchgear technologies, improving operational reliability and scalability of the suburban rail network.
