Mumbai’s Sewage system serves one of the world’s most densely populated urban regions and has evolved over several decades through multiple phases. Wastewater generation increased sharply with population growth and urban expansion, which demanded systematic upgrading to ensure reliable conveyance, treatment and disposal. The project covered rehabilitation of existing sewage pumping stations, construction of new high-capacity pumping facilities and development of treatment and disposal systems. The coastal location required carefully engineered outfall systems for safe disposal of treated effluent, and peak flow management during monsoon conditions placed exceptional stress on the network.

TCE's Story

Tata Consulting Engineers conducted feasibility assessment, detailed engineering and construction support across all stages. The team evaluated existing pumping stations, designed upgraded and new pumping facilities, engineered treatment works and prepared tender documents for civil, mechanical and electrical packages. Bid evaluation, equipment inspection and construction supervision were supported throughout.

Impact

The project improved capacity and resilience of Mumbai’s Sewage system, reduced overflows and strengthened environmental protection across major drainage zones while ensuring robust operation under monsoon conditions.
