Madras, now Chennai, faced water loss across its distribution network which strained resources and affected equitable service. The project identified root causes of loss and implemented effective solutions via representative districts and sub districts and used methods developed for intermittent low pressure supplies. Small areas were isolated and pressurised with mobile tankers and pumps and advanced equipment such as leak noise correlators, sounding rods and data loggers was used to locate and quantify leaks.

TCE's Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers collaborated with Thames Water International and Binnie and Partners. The team maintained a detailed database of consumer information, leak points and pipe conditions, conducted tests to assess flow capacity and physical integrity of trunk and feeder mains and evaluated reservoirs and treatment plants for physical losses. Training was delivered through on the job and formal courses for local engineers in leak detection, preventive maintenance and database management.

Impact

Leak reduction of approximately eighty percent was achieved where repairs were carried out, and recommendations laid the foundation for future rehabilitation and improved water management in Chennai.
