This project strengthened the high voltage network through substation augmentation and new transmission lines. The substation component included extension of nine existing 132/66 kV substations in Kathmandu and development of two new 66 kV substations in Kathmandu, including one GIS substation and one outdoor substation. The scope also included extension of one 132 kV substation in Duhabi.
The transmission line works included 132 kV double circuit line length of 17.5 kilometres in Kathmandu and 132 kV 4 circuit line length of four kilometres. In the Duhabi region, the works included 27 kilometres of 132 kV second circuit line, 1.5 kilometres of 132 kV double circuit line, and 1.4 kilometres of 132 kV single circuit line. The implementation period covered December 1993 to May 1997 for substations, December 1993 to May 1998 for Kathmandu transmission lines, and December 1993 to January 1996 for the Duhabi transmission line package.
TCE's Scope
TCE supported contract management, detailed engineering design and construction supervision and commissioning, working alongside a local consultant. The work covered both substation reinforcement and transmission line implementation, ensuring alignment between engineering design, procurement interfaces, construction progress and commissioning readiness across multiple packages.
Impact
The project strengthened the Kathmandu Valley high voltage backbone by expanding substation capacity and adding new high voltage corridors. It improved network reliability and operational flexibility by reinforcing existing substations, adding new 66 kV substations including GIS technology, and connecting key nodes through new 132 kV line sections across multiple configurations.
