Jamshedpur faced challenges from an ageing supply system with frequent leaks and pressure variations. The project aimed to understand deficiencies and deliver targeted interventions by conducting field surveys that installed meters on house connections and pressure gauges at more than one hundred locations to map normal pressure patterns and to assess carrying capacity of rising mains and perform sample tests to quantify leakage and identify pilot zones for focused studies.

TCE's Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers repaired or replaced leaking taps in each pilot area to eliminate wastage, applied the step test method to detect leaks and estimated that leakage accounted for twelve to twenty three percent of zonal supply even during short supply hours. A dedicated leakage control cell was recommended with methodologies for ongoing detection and specifications for equipment and staffing.

Impact

The project reduced wastage, improved system reliability and provided a basis for ongoing upgrades in Jamshedpur’s water supply system.
