This integrated programme addressed water supply, sewage treatment, solid waste management, and urban road improvements across four key towns in Uttarakhand: Dehradun, Nainital, Haldwani, and Tanakpur. Each of these towns presented distinct geographic and capacity constraints, requiring scalable and efficient systems capable of supporting future growth. The initiative introduced compact treatment layouts, optimised storage solutions, and energy-efficient equipment tailored to local conditions, while also integrating rainwater harvesting and facilities for the reuse of treated water for landscaping and non-potable needs.

TCE's Story

Tata Consulting Engineers supported the project through design and drawings review, procurement assistance, and construction supervision, ensuring consistency and quality across all locations. The team introduced several engineering innovations, including double-decker overhead tanks for land-constrained areas and two-tier sewage treatment plant layouts with 11 MLD basins to maximise capacity within limited footprints. Odour control systems and energy-efficient equipment were incorporated to improve operational sustainability. In Nainital, cured-in-place pipe technology was used to rehabilitate old sewer networks, minimising disruption and extending asset life. Rainwater harvesting was integrated into the conversion of soak pits, further enhancing the project’s environmental credentials.

Impact

The project significantly strengthened urban resilience and improved essential services across multiple hill towns in Uttarakhand. By delivering modern water supply, advanced sewage treatment, and solid waste management solutions, the initiative enhanced urban service delivery and environmental protection. The adoption of innovative engineering and sustainable practices has provided a robust platform for future expansion and set a benchmark for integrated urban infrastructure development in challenging hill environments.
