This project involves the development of India’s first integrated facility for recycling copper scrap and electronic waste. The initiative supports greener, stronger and smarter industrial practices by creating a large‑scale system for processing secondary materials. The facility is designed to handle 80 KTPA of total feed, comprising 30 KTPA of e‑waste and 50 KTPA of copper scrap.
From this input, the plant will produce 50 KTPA of LME grade‑A copper cathode. The processing flowsheet also enables the recovery of multiple high‑value metals and intermediates including gold, silver, platinum, palladium, lead tin alloy, zinc oxide and nickel sulphate. The development is planned for future expansion, where the facility can scale up to produce 100 KTPA of LME grade‑A copper cathode using 60 KTPA of e‑waste and 100 KTPA of copper scrap. This positions the project as a major step in strengthening the circular economy and advancing responsible metal recovery in India.
The project includes extensive plant systems such as storage and feed preparation, smelting and furnace equipment, slag treatment units, refining systems, anode casting arrangements, electro‑refining circuits, precious metal recovery areas, machine halls, digitisation packages and full civil and infrastructure works for a greenfield site.
TCE’s Scope
TCE is providing complete basic engineering for balance‑of‑plant systems followed by multidisciplinary detailed engineering across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation disciplines. Procurement assistance includes vendor evaluation, review of technical submissions and verification of compliance against specifications.
Project management covers planning, coordination and documentation control to maintain smooth execution. Construction supervision includes on‑site engineering support, technical query resolution, monitoring of installation activities and ensuring adherence to safety, quality and design requirements.
TCE’s scope ensures that all systems are designed and integrated to create a robust, scalable and efficient recycling and refining facility.
Impact
The project plays a crucial role in supporting India’s shift toward sustainable resource management. By processing 80 KTPA of secondary materials and recovering copper and valuable metals, the facility reduces reliance on primary metal production and contributes to lower energy use and reduced emissions. The inclusion of e‑waste recycling creates an essential pathway for responsible recovery of materials that would otherwise enter landfills.
Advanced smelting, refining and precious‑metal recovery technologies will enhance operational efficiency and product quality. The project creates opportunities for engineers, technicians and skilled workers across construction, commissioning and future operations.
In the long term, the facility will serve as a significant domestic source of recycled copper and recovered metals, strengthen industrial supply chains and support India’s progress toward a circular and low‑carbon economy.
