A first-of-its-kind green ammonia production facility was developed in Donaldsonville, Louisiana to enable large-scale ammonia manufacturing using renewable inputs. Commissioned by a leading chemical producer, the project is designed for an annual production capacity of 20,000 metric tons. The facility supports the client’s long-term decarbonization strategy and contributes to the growth of a low‑carbon chemicals market in the United States.

TCE’s Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers delivered engineering services for the Outside Battery Limits (OSBL) infrastructure to support safe and reliable plant operations. The scope included site development, stormwater and drainage systems, firewater networks, and paving works. TCE also carried out the layout, design, and implementation of new pipe racks and interconnecting piping between OSBL and ISBL units. In addition, systems engineering was provided for nitrogen and instrument air receivers, along with the design of a warehouse facility to support logistics and operations.

Impact

The project enabled the successful delivery of the first green ammonia plant in the United States with fully integrated OSBL infrastructure, ensuring operational reliability from startup. It establishes a scalable reference for future green ammonia developments and supports the integration of renewable feedstocks into conventional chemical value chains. By enabling ammonia production without fossil‑derived hydrogen, the facility contributes to emissions reduction and advances sustainability objectives across the chemicals and energy sectors.
