The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), located 80 km north of Pune, is a premier facility for radio astronomical research in the metre wavelength range. It features 30 fully steerable 45 meter diameter parabolic dishes spread over up to 25 km, making it a significant engineering achievement in basic sciences by Indian scientists and engineers.

GMRT stands as an indigenous project constructed cost-effectively through the ‘SMART’ concept (Stretch Mesh Attached to Rope Trusses) for lightweight, low-cost dishes.

TCE was integral to this project, handling the Conceptual Design, Feasibility Study, Detailed Engineering, and Construction Monitoring. The observatory’s unique configuration, with fourteen antennae in a central square and sixteen in a Y shaped layout, maximises its observational capacity, underscoring India’s scientific and engineering capabilities in the global arena of radio astronomy.
