This project involved detailed electrical power system studies to support expansion of an industrial complex through addition of a third process train. The existing facility comprised two operating trains commissioned earlier, and the expansion included development of a third train with additional ammonia and urea production capacity.

The assignment focused on assessing the impact of integrating the new expansion load into the existing electrical network. Key technical challenges addressed included severe voltage dips during transformer energisation, increased short circuit levels following integration of new generation, motor starting and neutral grounding resistor operation during emergency power supply conditions, protection relay coordination challenges, high induced voltages in long cable sheaths, and limitations of the existing load shedding scheme.

Comprehensive system studies were carried out to assess steady state and dynamic performance and to develop mitigation measures for identified risks.

TCE's Scope

TCE carried out detailed electrical power system studies and owner’s engineering support for the new electrical distribution management system associated with the expansion. The scope included load flow studies, short circuit analysis, motor starting studies, protection coordination assessment, cable sheath voltage evaluation and development of an upgraded dynamic load shedding scheme.

Impact

The studies improved overall system reliability and stability by identifying and mitigating high fault current and voltage dip issues. Introduction of current limiting and voltage mitigation measures resolved equipment performance challenges, while the upgraded dynamic load shedding scheme enhanced resilience and scalability of the electrical network for future expansion.
