As transmission networks become larger and more interconnected, utilities are increasingly adopting digital technologies to improve asset visibility, operational efficiency and workforce readiness. This project focused on creating a digital twin of a 765/400 kV air insulated substation, providing a virtual representation of key assets and equipment. The solution was designed to bring together engineering information, operational data and simulation capabilities in a single environment, enabling stakeholders to visualise assets, monitor performance and support training activities through an interactive digital platform.

TCE's Scope

TCE developed a 3D digital twin covering multiple voltage levels and substation bays. The scope included assessment of implementation readiness, integration of engineering knowledge and operational information, development of dashboards for asset monitoring and performance tracking, and incorporation of anomaly detection capabilities. TCE also enabled planning, safety and training simulations, along with robotic inspection simulations to validate inspection workflows and operational scenarios. In addition, implementation architecture, proof-of-concept support and user training were provided to facilitate adoption of the digital twin platform.

Impact

The project established a centralised digital environment for visualising and managing critical substation assets. It improved access to engineering and maintenance information, strengthened operator training through simulation-based learning, and enhanced decision-making by providing actionable operational insights. The digital twin also created a foundation for advanced asset management, predictive maintenance and future digital transformation initiatives.
