Shimla’s ageing water distribution system was characterised by intermittent supply, pressure fluctuations and high losses which intensified during peak tourist seasons. The project aimed to transform the system into a fully pressurised and continuous arrangement capable of delivering reliable service year round. Transmission mains were upgraded, distribution networks were rehabilitated and modern storage reservoirs were constructed to support round the clock supply. Smart metering systems were introduced to enable accurate consumption measurement, faster leak detection and improved demand management.

TCE's Story

Tata Consulting Engineers contributed through detailed engineering, technology evaluation and system optimisation. Drone based surveys were used to map terrain, identify reservoir locations and optimise pipeline routing in a steep and constrained landscape. Technical interventions were complemented by community engagement to build awareness of responsible water use.

Impact

The project reduced water losses, improved pressure stability and enhanced service reliability. It established a replicable model for hill cities that face similar geographic and demand related challenges.
