Location

Karnataka, India

The Chunchanakatte Hydropower Project is a 2 x 9 MW run of river installation located on the left bank of the Cauvery river, approximately 30 km upstream of the K R Sagar dam in Mysore district of Karnataka.

River flows are diverted through an 800 m long canal and conveyed to the powerhouse through 2 penstocks of 3.6 m diameter. Power evacuation is carried out through a 66 kV double circuit transmission line. Unit 1 was commissioned in September 1997 and Unit 2 in August 1998.

TCE’s scope

TCE carried out site investigations, preparation of the detailed project report and detailed engineering for civil, hydro mechanical and electrical systems. TCE also assisted in obtaining statutory clearances from relevant authorities.

Impact

The project achieves an estimated annual generation of 38 million units. The station operates with vertical axis Kaplan turbines designed for a net head of 20.75 m and a design discharge of 52 m³ per second, supporting reliable medium head hydropower generation.
