The Bombay Sewage Disposal Project was conceived as a major intervention to improve wastewater disposal for Mumbai, building on earlier Sewage initiatives. Increasing sewage volumes and growing environmental concerns in coastal waters required enhanced treatment and disposal systems to protect public health and marine ecosystems. The project included deep underground conveyance and marine disposal infrastructure to transport treated wastewater away from the shoreline, which comprised large pumping stations, underground tunnels and marine outfalls designed for reliable operation under challenging subsurface and marine conditions.

TCE's Story

Tata Consulting Engineers undertook engineering, design coordination and project management support for pumping stations, underground tunnels and treatment related infrastructure. The team prepared tender documents and supported construction, paid special attention to material selection and structural design to ensure durability in aggressive marine and subsurface environments and adopted advanced construction techniques for deep tunnels and large substructures which required precise engineering control. Quality assurance and coordination across multiple contractors and packages were integral.

Impact

The project advanced Mumbai’s wastewater disposal capabilities, reduced pollution of coastal waters and strengthened the city’s long-term sewage and environmental management framework.
