A first‑of‑its‑kind blue ammonia facility was developed in Donaldsonville, Louisiana to support the production of low‑carbon ammonia and advance cleaner fuels and sustainable chemicals manufacturing in the United States. The project integrates carbon capture systems with existing ammonia production infrastructure, enabling reduced emissions while supporting growing global demand for clean ammonia.

TCE’s Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers provided design and engineering services across key process, utility, electrical, and infrastructure systems to support the new blue ammonia facility. The scope included engineering and design for two large carbon dioxide compressors to support carbon capture operations, along with a new cooling tower, associated pumps, and a glycol dehydration unit.

TCE also delivered the expansion of electrical infrastructure required to power the new systems. Sitewide infrastructure design covered paving, drainage, and firewater networks to ensure safe and reliable operations. In addition, TCE engineered piping and pipe racks, including an export pipeline connecting the facility to the off‑take partner’s metering station. A new warehouse facility was also designed to support ongoing plant operations and logistics.

Impact

The project enabled the commissioning of the first blue ammonia facility in the United States, supporting large‑scale decarbonization within the chemicals sector. Integration of carbon capture systems with existing production facilities strengthened operational efficiency and emissions performance. The facility establishes a reference for future blue ammonia developments and supports the transition toward lower‑carbon fuels and sustainable chemical production.
