Ahmedabad’s water supply system faced persistent leaks and contamination risks which affected reliability and safety. Pilot leakage assessments and performance evaluations were undertaken using stop tap methods and special supply arrangements to measure leakage in selected areas. Flow and pressure data, structural soundness of pipes and consumption patterns were analysed and recommendations were made for systematic monitoring of underground tanks and strategic pressure points.

TCE's Scope

Tata Consulting Engineers introduced innovative methods for detecting leaks in low pressure intermittent supply systems. Pilot tests isolated small residential zones and used mobile tankers and pumps to pressurise the network while electronic sounding rods and pipe locators were employed to identify leaks. Municipal engineers were trained through hands on involvement. Custom software processed field data and strategies for ongoing leak detection, system monitoring and staff training were prepared.

Impact

Targeted repairs substantially reduced leakage levels and improved overall system performance, supporting Ahmedabad’s long term water management objectives.
