This project involves design of compact 220 kV double circuit transmission towers using optimised conductor arrangements to reduce right of way requirements and environmental impact. The initial vertical formation design required two vertical interphase spacings per circuit, resulting in larger structural envelopes.
An alternative delta formation was developed to reduce interphase spacing to one per circuit. Intermediate tie members were introduced at X arms to achieve optimal conductor clearances while maintaining electrical safety. The revised configuration significantly reduced structural quantities and footprint.
The compact design was particularly suited for environmentally sensitive areas, including mangrove filled regions, where minimising land disturbance and forest clearance was critical.
TCE's Scope
TCE acted as design engineering consultant and developed the optimised delta formation tower configuration. The scope included structural optimisation, interphase spacing validation, reduction of steel tonnage and assessment of environmental and constructability benefits.
Impact
The optimised compact tower design resulted in substantial reduction in structural quantities and construction footprint. It eliminated the need for forest clearance in mangrove areas, reduced construction timelines and enabled significant savings compared to the original proposal while maintaining transmission safety and reliability.
