The project involved the development of a diesel engine based thermal power plant with an installed capacity of 200 MW, configured as 4 x 50 MW generating units. The plant was located adjacent to an existing power station in an urban setting and was planned with provision for future expansion of 100 MW.

The power plant utilised 2 stroke diesel engines, marking one of the earliest large scale applications of this technology in India. Each diesel engine was rated at 51480 kW and operated at 103.4 rpm, coupled with generators rated at 50000 kW with a terminal voltage of 11 kV. The plant achieved an annual energy generation of 1489 million units at 85 percent PLF.

Fuel systems were designed to operate on low sulphur heavy stock and light diesel oil. Water requirements were met through an in house sewage treatment facility supplemented by municipal supply. Power generated at 11 kV was stepped up through generator transformers and evacuated to the grid through a 110 kV switchyard.

TCE’s Scope

TCE provided owner’s consultancy services including review of technical proposals, detailed engineering review, inspection services and site supervision covering construction, start up and commissioning activities.

Impact

TCE’s involvement ensured effective coordination between high capacity diesel engine technology, electrical systems and grid evacuation infrastructure. The project was commissioned successfully and delivered reliable power generation in a constrained urban environment.
