Location

Bahrain

This 100 MW plus offshore floating solar initiative explores the potential for large scale solar generation in Bahrain’s marine environment. The study evaluates multiple offshore locations, including Al Dur and North Amwaj, to determine their suitability for hosting floating photovoltaic installations.

The assessment includes detailed site data analysis, desktop studies and viability reviews to understand whether each location can support a floating solar plant of meaningful capacity. The work also includes the estimation of potential solar capacity based on available area, evaluation of energy yield at the selected site and an initial review of how power can be evacuated to shore. A preliminary Single Line Diagram and layout were prepared to support the conceptual development of the offshore photovoltaic plant. The project was completed in October 2024.

TCE's Scope

TCE carried out the complete feasibility study for the offshore floating solar initiative. This included ranking the proposed sites based on technical suitability, marine conditions and long term operational considerations. The scope covered the estimation of floating solar capacity using the available area at each location, assessment of energy yield at the specified sites and examination of the feasibility of power evacuation from the offshore location to the shore.

TCE prepared the preliminary Single Line Diagram and conceptual layout for the proposed floating solar plant. The team developed the full site assessment report and delivered a comprehensive feasibility package that included site ranking, energy yield estimation, array layout, platform related considerations, anchoring requirements, mooring requirements, preliminary cost estimate, environmental assessment and final recommendations.

The work considered the unique challenges of the marine environment, the absence of commercial references for similar high capacity offshore floating solar projects and the need to ensure reliable long term performance.

Impact

TCE’s study provided a clear technical foundation for introducing floating solar capacity in Bahrain’s offshore zones. The assessment improved understanding of potential generation, operational feasibility and environmental considerations for high capacity installations at sea. The detailed site ranking, capacity estimation, platform and mooring assessment and preliminary cost evaluation offer a structured pathway for advancing offshore solar development in the region. The work supports future decision making by identifying sites that can host floating solar plants safely, efficiently and in alignment with regulatory and environmental needs.

The project also marks an important step in exploring renewable energy in marine settings, contributing to long term diversification of energy sources and supporting national sustainability goals.
