The Challenge

India’s rapidly growing renewable energy generation requires efficient and reliable transmission networks. Traditional transmission systems operate on static ratings that assume fixed weather conditions, often resulting in under-utilisation of existing assets.

With rising demand and increasing integration of wind and solar power, the need for real-time visibility of transmission line performance became essential. The challenge was to create a solution that could dynamically measure and predict line loading under varying weather and operational conditions, safely and accurately, without disrupting ongoing grid operations.

The Innovation

The Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) solution developed by TCE introduces a data-driven approach to grid operation. The system continuously measures line and weather parameters such as conductor temperature, current flow, wind speed, solar radiation, and ambient temperature through a network of advanced sensors.

An AI-enabled digital platform analyses this data to calculate the real-time load-carrying capacity of the transmission line, providing live insights to grid operators. Forecasting tools allow visibility of the available capacity for up to 168 hours, enabling proactive decision-making and better planning of renewable power integration.

The project also involved hotline installation of sensors on live transmission lines, an engineering achievement that required high precision, safety excellence, and regulatory compliance.

Implementation Approach

TCE provided comprehensive services, including detailed design, engineering, design validation, safety planning, procurement of sensors, installation and commissioning of the complete DLR solution. The team also led the integration of DLR data into the digital platform, ensuring seamless operation and compatibility with grid systems.

Following commissioning, TCE conducted extensive training for operational personnel and is providing ongoing maintenance and technical support for sustained reliability and performance.

The project brought together global expertise in sensor technology, data analytics, and field integration through collaboration with international and Indian technology partners. TCE led the engineering and implementation effort, ensuring that the DLR system met the technical, environmental, and safety standards applicable to Indian conditions.

Impact and Benefits

The implementation of the DLR solution has delivered multiple benefits across operational, environmental, and financial dimensions:

  • Optimised Asset Utilisation: Improved use of existing transmission lines through accurate, real-time performance assessment.
  • Renewable Integration: Enabled greater absorption of wind power during high generation periods, reducing curtailment and improving grid stability.
  • Deferred Capital Expenditure: Reduced the immediate need for new infrastructure by increasing the efficiency of current assets.
  • Enhanced Grid Reliability: Supported informed decision-making through predictive analytics and live monitoring.
  • Sustainability Contribution: Advanced India’s clean energy and decarbonisation goals under SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Safety and Compliance

Safety remained central throughout the project. Installation on energised 400 kilovolt transmission lines required detailed risk assessment, special equipment, and skilled execution. TCE ensured full adherence to safety and regulatory guidelines, achieving successful completion without operational disruption.

Outcome

The Dynamic Line Rating project has created a replicable and scalable model for the greening & modernisation of transmission systems in India. It has proven the technical and operational feasibility of DLR technology under local conditions, providing valuable insight for future grid upgrades and large-scale adoption.

This pioneering initiative showcases TCE’s ability to combine engineering excellence, digital innovation, and sustainability to enable smarter, greener and more resilient energy systems for the future.
