Among these, the wedge is a relatively lesser-known flow element that creates a differential pressure for measuring flow.

A wedge-type flowmeter is used to measure the flow rate of liquids, particularly in industrial processes. It employs a wedge-shaped obstruction within the fluid flow path. As the liquid passes the obstruction, a pressure differential is created, which is correlated with the flow rate.

While the fundamental measurement principle is familiar, the geometry of the wedge expands its usefulness across demanding fluid conditions.

How Does a Wedge-Type Flowmeter Work?
The key components of a wedge-type flowmeter include the wedge, pressure taps and sensors. The wedge creates a pressure drop across the obstruction, enabling the flow to be measured.

Different designs are available, including the V-shaped wedge, concentric cone and eccentric cone, with individual configurations suited to specific applications.

A key consideration is installation. Proper alignment and positioning of the wedge are important for achieving reliable and accurate measurements.

Fig. 1: Typical schematic of a wedge-type flowmeter

Why Wedge Flowmeters Matter in Difficult Applications
One of the primary advantages of wedge-type flowmeters is their ability to handle a variety of liquids, including corrosive and abrasive fluids. Their characteristics make them useful in industries such as petrochemicals, chemical processing and water treatment, where challenging operating conditions can influence the choice of flow-measurement technology.

Wedge flowmeters are particularly suited to hard-to-meter line fluids, including:

Slurry liquids that are fibrous or abrasive

Air-entrained liquids

High-viscosity liquids

This ability to work with difficult fluids broadens the range of situations in which differential pressure-based measurement can be considered.

However, the technology also requires careful application. Changes in fluid properties can affect measurement, while installation needs to be carefully managed to minimise inaccuracies. Regular maintenance is necessary to support the flowmeter’s long-term functionality and accuracy.

Advances in technology continue to improve the precision and reliability of wedge-type flowmeters, strengthening their role in industrial processes that depend on effective fluid flow monitoring and control.

Wedge vs Orifice Flowmeters: Understanding the Difference
Wedge-type and orifice-type flowmeters are both used for industrial fluid-flow measurement, but their designs and performance characteristics differ. Understanding these differences is important when selecting an appropriate solution for process conditions.

Selecting the Right Flow Measurement Approach
The choice between a wedge-type and an orifice-type flowmeter cannot be made on a single parameter alone. Factors such as fluid characteristics, required accuracy, installation constraints and budget considerations influence the decision. Each technology has its own strengths and limitations and is therefore suited to different industrial scenarios.

For relatively clean fluids and applications where simplicity and cost are important considerations, an orifice flowmeter can continue to serve the measurement requirement. Where liquids are corrosive, abrasive, highly viscous, air entrained or contain slurry, however, wedge-type flowmeters provide an alternative worth evaluating.

Ultimately, effective flow measurement is about matching the measurement principle and flow element to the realities of the process.
